Initiatives in the SPAUD Department at Âé¶¹Çø

Calvin's Speech Pathology and Audiology Department is intentional in incorporating DEI initiatives into access and delivery of services, recruitment and retention of students, education and training of students, community outreach, and workplace policies and procedures - and has been recognized nationally for these initiatives. These include: 

Capacity Building Initiative for SPAUD Faculty, Staff, and Students

The Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAUD) department offers major-specific cultural competency opportunities for faculty and students. This initiative aims to evaluate current cultural competency practices and provide more intercultural learning resources for faculty, staff, and students. Activities include workshops with guest speakers specializing in DEI within the profession, funding for workshops, and support for research study personnel and materials to assess the effectiveness of such efforts.

Recruitment Initiatives Focusing on Diversity and Inclusion

A primary initiative implemented by the Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAUD) admissions committee to increase recruitment of BIPOC students is a holistic review process (HRP) of applications for the residential and distance education modes of the graduate program. The department also implemented other recruitment initiatives such as visit days for the SPAUD undergraduate and graduate programs, establishing and maintaining sustained relationships with regional high schools, and collaborating with Âé¶¹Çø high school counselors who work with local, state, and regional schools. These initiatives and partnerships have provided prospective students an opportunity to not only learn more about the different facets of CSD, but also have enabled students to better understand the mission, vision, and supports of the undergraduate and graduate SPAUD programs at Calvin.

SPAUD Small Group Community Initiative

This initiative focuses on the retention and support of Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAUD) BIPOC, international, and third-culture faculty and students. Over the years, the program has modified and expanded this small group to achieve a better sense of community, engage in deeper learning about each other’s cultures and cultural values, be more hospitable, and serve as a better support system for one another within the major. Feedback from students and faculty from this group has enabled the department to reflect and implement changes in curriculum, the feedback mechanism in classes and clinic, as well as foster greater interaction among/with students.

SPAUD Peer Mentoring Program

The Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAUD) department at Âé¶¹Çø launched a peer mentoring program in 2020 aimed at (1) improving retention, (2) increasing support, and (3) increasing a sense of belonging for BIPOC, international, first-generation, and third-culture students in the department. The program incorporates faculty support, pre-program training, and goal-directed tasks as guided by a curriculum. The program also explores DEI topics related to the field as well as virtues in community and teamwork such as hospitality, stewardship, humility, advocacy, and commitment.
