Student runs to combat human trafficking

Thu, Apr 17, 2014

When Laurel Youngquist crosses the finish line at , she鈥檒l be 3.1 miles closer to reaching her goal.

When the first-year Calvin student turned 19 this January, it dawned on her that 2014 was her last year to be a teenager. So she wanted to do something significant before crossing over into her twenties, and asked God for the opportunity.

鈥淚 asked God to break my heart,鈥 Youngquist says of the decision, 鈥渁nd in many ways, God has broken my heart very specifically for people who are hurting due to human trafficking.鈥

So Youngquist set a goal to run 500 miles this year to increase awareness and raise financial support to combat human trafficking. With fundraising tools provided by Minnesota-based nonprofit , (in honor of turning 19) for Run Free, an organization that helps victims of trafficking in Southeast Asia.

Pushing through

Balancing life as a first-year , Youngquist admits that trying to find a consistent time to run each day hasn鈥檛 been easy鈥攂ut she is often able to begin her day with a run around Calvin鈥檚 campus at 6 a.m. before hurrying off to class and activities.

Even this year鈥檚 extreme winter weather couldn鈥檛 stop Youngquist: 鈥淚 think that鈥檚 the part of the physical sacrifice thing, especially with the weather,鈥 she shares.

Already feeling changes

Since starting to run for the cause in January, Youngquist says, she has noticed a change in herself. 鈥淚 can already tell that it鈥檚 changing the way that I talk, which is weird because you wouldn鈥檛 think running would change the way someone talks,鈥 she admits. 鈥淏ut I realize that on the days that I run, I feel better about the rest of my day because that鈥檚 time I have away from people and time I have with God.鈥

Youngquist says that the campaign has opened up the door to conversations with friends and family about the way God is working in her life. And, when she does have the chance to run with friends, Youngquist says she enjoys talking to them about their spiritual lives and feels she is connecting with God by connecting with others.

An everyday thing

Youngquist says she hopes to inspire others to find causes they are passionate about. 鈥淭here are little things that we can do to change other people鈥檚 lives that we can focus on doing each day,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 an everyday thing, not just looking at a whole year.鈥

Youngquist will be participating in Calvin鈥檚 annual on April 26, 2014, to continue to add miles to her journey. To support her efforts, visit her .
