Denver alumni meet van Gogh, host women's hoops team

Fri, Mar 01, 2013

The alumni office has named Calvin art professor its MVP of the year for the numerous times he has shared his knowledge of painters and paintings across the country, and he added to his legend last November in Denver.

Luttikhuizen gave a pre-viewing lecture at the Denver Art Museum prior to alumni and friends of the taking in the Becoming Van Gogh exhibition—an in-depth exploration of Vincent van Gogh’s unconventional path to becoming one of the world’s most recognizable artists.

Art museum events have been drawing solid numbers at regional network gatherings, and the Colorado site was no exception, with tickets selling out quickly. Luttikhuizen is booked for two art museum events this spring, in San Francisco and Seattle.

Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, the hospitable Calvin alumni of Colorado organized to host the as the Knights played in a Colorado Springs holiday tournament. The Knights had a great season, ranked near the top of the NCAA Division III polls all year, and two victories in the Centennial State showed alums why.

The team was grateful for the housing, meals and tours provided by alumni in both the Springs and Denver. Highlights were a tour of the Pepsi Center (home to the Denver Nuggets) led by Nuggets employee (and former Calvin Knight) Derek Griffin ’08 and of the Air Force Academy, where the women met Joe Galema ’76, the academy’s music director and organist at the impressive Cadet Chapel.
