Calvin Bands Present Matinee Doubleheader
A pair of renowned bands at Calvin College -- the Calvin Band and the Knollcrest Band -- will present a rare daytime concert, free and open to all, at 12:30 pm on Monday, March 3.
Geared for upper elementary through adult ages, the theme of the two-pronged concert will be "Living Composers" and it will feature a multimedia approach to their music, including both the live performances by the Calvin bands as well as video excerpts of the composers in action.
Calvin director Tiffany Engle says the concert will feature an eclectic mix of modern composers, including Chen Yi, Timothy Mahr, Guy Woolfenden, Michael Daugherty, Laszlo Dubrovay, Eric Whitacre, and Martin Ellerby.
"Unfortunately, musicians and audiences often have a 'dis-connect' with composers," she said. "We tend to think of just the piece of music, and not the person who came up with its various musical sounds and formal organization. We hope to bridge the gap with this concert -- not only performing the works of a handful of leading contemporary composers, but engaging in a conversation with them about their music."
Although the concert is free, groups can reserve a block of seats in advance (for groups of 10 or more) via Calvin College director of community relations Carol Rienstra. Blocks must be booked by February 25 by calling 526-6175 or sending e-mail to partnerships@calvin.edu
