Calvin announces 2007-2008 enrollment

Tue, Sep 25, 2007

The college's first-year class for 2007-2008 numbers 1,039 students, a jump of 12 students from last year and up almost 140 students from three years ago.

Calvin admissions officials are pleased with the total enrollment, the size and quality of the first-year class and the total pool of students who expressed an interest in Calvin. Vice president for enrollment and external programs Tom McWhertor says Calvin has strategically chosen to maintain its enrollment at current levels because "we are convinced that this size provides the optimum opportunities for students and faculty."

Meanwhile Calvin's chief number-cruncher Tom VanEck says that this year's student body includes:

  • 2,279 women (54%) and 1,945 men (46%), mirroring the national average among all colleges and universities
  • 360 international students (8.5%), including 168 Canadian citizens (4%) and 192 (4.5%) who are citizens of other countries
  • 268 (6.3%) U.S. students of color, one of the highest numbers in Calvin's history
  • 2,214 students from Michigan (52.4%), with out-of-state students coming from 47 other states
  • 2,236 (53%) students from denominations other than the Christian Reformed Church
  • 1,616 (39.7%) students who have at least one parent who is a Calvin alum
